Jurors in Michigan heard secretly recorded audio as prosecutors tried to show how a paramilitary group was connected to a plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The audio played during testimony Friday features contemptuous talk about police and politicians in the basement of a Grand Rapids vacuum shop where Adam Fox was living. Fox was recently convicted of conspiring to abduct Whitmer as a step toward kicking off a U.S. civil war. Joe Morrison, Paul Bellar and Pete Musico were members of a group called the Wolverine Watchmen. They're charged with providing material support to Fox and others, though they’re not accused of directly participating in the Whitmer kidnapping plot.

Indigenous symbols found painted next to Roman Catholic motifs at a 1550s-era convent near Mexico City suggest Spanish priests negotiated with Indigenous leaders in the first years after the 1521 conquest. The popular belief has long been that the Spanish simply imposed their religion and government system after the defeat of the Aztec empire. But the few Spanish priests faced with the monumental task of converting thousands of Indigenous people in a short period of time may have had been forced to take Indigenous preferences into account. Experts said Friday the paintings suggest a dialogue between the two cultures.

ATLANTA — Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan has hardly minced words about his fears of the Donald Trump-driven direction of the Republican Party.

Cate Blanchett isn't just playing a classical music conductor in the new film “Tár," she is actually conducting a live orchestra of professional musicians. She also learned how to speak German and play the piano for the role which some have called her best performance ever. The film, which is currently playing in limited release and expands nationwide on Oct. 28, grapples with big questions about power and art and the myriad abuses that systems allow for creative genuises. It's the first film from writer-director Todd Field in over 15 years and his one wish is that audiences see it in theaters.

Nearly 200 nations belonging to a UN group are setting a goal of making air travel net-zero for carbon emissions by 2050. Environmental groups praised the move on Friday, but they cautioned that the goal needs to be backed up by tough policies by governments around the world. Aviation is a relatively small contributor to overall climate-changing emissions, but its share is expected to grow as more people travel. Environmentalists say Friday's decision by the UN group could encourage more production of so-called sustainable aviation fuel.

A federal judge has set limits on one of the U.S. Postal Service’s cost-cutting practices that contributed to a slowdown of mail deliveries ahead of the 2020 presidential election. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan concluded that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s actions slowed deliveries and that he acted without the consent of the Postal Regulatory Commission. The judge said the primary reason for delays was DeJoy's elimination of extra late truck deliveries. He imposed limits on the move that saved on overtime costs but meant some mail was left behind to be delivered the following day.

A Dane County judge for now is refusing to allow local election clerks to accept partial witness addresses on absentee ballots. A group called Rise Inc. filed a lawsuit in September seeking a judicial order requiring the Wisconsin Elections Commission to tell local clerks that they must accept ballots as long as the witness address includes enough information that clerks can reasonably discern where the witness can be contacted. Rise Inc. attorneys asked Judge Juan Colas to issue a temporary order requiring the commission to inform clerks they could accept ballots under those conditions. Colas denied the request during a hearing Friday. The case will continue with a scheduling conference Oct. 17.

CLEVELAND — Manager Kevin Cash and the Rays have been saying for weeks that they like the new postseason format Major League Baseball adopted this year because it doesn’t force the wild-card teams into a one-game showdown after a six-month, season-long battle.

Construction worker Craig Steven Markgraff Jr. was last seen clinging to a tree as rising waters from Hurricane Ian lashed areas dozens of miles inland from Florida’s Gulf Coast. One of Ian's first publicly identified victims in Florida, the 35-year-old man’s body was found this week by rescue crews near his home in Zolfo Springs in central Florida. That's according to the Hardee County Sheriff’s Office said. Markgraff was known as “CJ” to many of his friends. But to his sister April Rudolph, he was just Craig and “the best big brother ever.” She says that, “ If you ever needed anything, he was right there. He was the protector of the family.”

A police officer who arrested a woman who was seriously injured after the police vehicle she was sitting in was struck by a freight train in Colorado said he didn't realize he had stopped the vehicle on the railroad tracks. In police body camera video the sergeant told another officer that he thought he had cleared the tracks when he stopped Yareni Rios-Gonzalez last month in a suspected road rage case involving a gun. He said he pulled up right behind her truck and was focused on her because he was concerned about weapons. He also said he didn't know another officer had put her in his vehicle until after the crash.

North Dakota’s five American Indian tribes want exclusive rights to host internet gambling and sports betting throughout the state utilizing servers located on their reservations. The tribes are turning to Republican Gov. Doug Burgum to approve the idea, under tribal-state agreements known as a compacts. The current compacts expire at the end of this year and only Burgum can approve them. The governor wouldn't comment on the proposal because negotiations are ongoing. Tribes argue the provision is needed because of the explosion of electronic pull tab machines across the state that have hurt their casinos, which are central to many tribes’ economies.

The White House says President Joe Biden’s warnings that the world is at risk of nuclear "Armageddon” were meant to convey that no one should underestimate the extraordinary danger if Russia deploys tactical nuclear weapons in its war against Ukraine. The president’s grim assessment sent ripples around the world on Friday and also appeared to edge beyond the boundaries of current U.S. intelligence assessments. U.S. national security officials continue to say they have no evidence that Russia’s Vladimir Putin is preparing for the use of nuclear weapons.

Cantu backed away as Brennand opened fire and he was struck with the car's door. Cantu was hospitalized in stable condition.

If the squabbling ever stops over Elon Musk’s renewed bid to buy Twitter, experts say he still faces a huge obstacle to closing the $44 billion deal: Keeping his financing in place. Earlier this week Musk reversed course and said he’d go through with acquiring the social media company under the same terms he agreed to in April. But after months of tweetstorms and legal barbs, there are scars and suspicions on both sides. Both sides are now fighting over whether Twitter's lawsuit against Musk should be dropped. For the deal to go through, Musk has to hold together a group of banks and investors that will help him pay for the purchase.

The Indianapolis Colts thought they could put on an entertaining prime-time show. Instead, they turned most football fans off with another dismal offensive performance. Even though the Colts won 12-9 in overtime, getting there was ugly. They gave up six more sacks on the season and had two more turnovers. They also failed to score a touchdown for the second time this season. Coach Frank Reich knows the Colts can't continue playing this way and make the playoffs.

The 2023 Eurovision Song Contest will be staged in the English city of Liverpool. Britain has been asked to hold the event on behalf of designated host country Ukraine. The BBC said Friday that the birthplace of The Beatles beat Glasgow, Scotland, the other finalist to hold the pan-continental music competition. Ukraine won the right to host the pop extravaganza when its entry, folk-rap ensemble Kalush Orchestra, won this year’s contest in May. Britain’s Sam Ryder came second. Organizers concluded it was too risky to stage the event in Ukraine, so the 2023 contest went to Britain, which says the event will be a celebration of Ukrainian culture and creativity. The 2023 Eurovision final will be held on May 13.
