A man who walked into a Greenville jewelry store during regular business hours ran out with a necklace worth thousands of dollars around his neck, police said Tuesday.

The incident, which was reported as shoplifting, happened last Thursday just after 8 p.m. when three men walked into Diamond Couture, in Haywood Mall, according to a police report.

One of the men asked to see a necklace, valued at $40,000, while the other two continued to walk around the store, looking at multiple displays, the report said.

The clerk asked the man for a piece of identification, which he provided, so the clerk got the necklace out of the display case and put it around his neck, the report said.

The man claimed to be from out of town, police said.

The man then asked the clerk if he could also see a Rolex watch, and soon after that the man "darted out the door, followed by the other two suspects," the report said.

The thieves ran down the stairs and out an employee exit, police said.

The store still had the ID left behind by the man and gave it to the police along with vague descriptions of the men.

The suspects face minimum charges of grand larceny of more than $5,000, according to the report.
