Ten Earrings To Buy: Dainty, Bold, Sculptural and Polished Gold Hoops – From Australian Jewellery Labels

Hoop earrings have been around for millennia; they date back to ancient times, as far back as 2500 BCE. While it’s a trend that’s never really gone away – Black and Latina women in the US wore them through the ’70s to ’90s as a symbol of resistance and cultural identity – the gold hoop has been given a new lease on life thanks in part to the “clean girl aesthetic” and “model off-duty look” on Tiktok.

And while it might be trendy now, we don’t see the hoop going away any time soon. It’s stuck around for 4000 years, after all. It’s here to stay. Here are some of our favourites from Aussie labels to add to your jewellery collection.

Lucy Folk Anchovy hoop earrings, $385 Is there a beachier, more free-spirited Aussie jewellery label than Lucy Folk? Not many others would make earrings that resemble anchovies, but this textured pair has all the tiny ridges without the fishy smell – although unfortunately you can’t have these on toast. It’s one of the label’s bestselling styles, and it’s easy to see why. The hoops are handmade with gold plate and add enough quirk to your look without being too much of a statement piece.

Arms of Eve Sebastian gold hoop earrings, $120 Designer Kerryn Langer’s African heritage meets Australian beach-boho in jewellery label Arms of Eve. And it shows in these gold hoops (18-carat plating over sterling silver) with a crushed and crumpled look. If you prefer petite and dainty over big and bold (or have multiple piercings and want your earrings to match), the Arabella and Luka hoops have the same textured design but in smaller sizes.

Sarah & Sebastian Gossamer hoops, $1400 These aren’t accessories you’d just buy on a whim – but really, nothing from Sarah & Sebastian is. This 10-carat pair is adorned with 20 round and marquise-shaped diamonds, all set by hand, and each pair is made to order. They’re small enough to be discreet, and intricate enough to earn a double-take.

Chief Infinity hoops, $500 These hoops from Chief weren’t designed to hide behind your hair – with a five-centimetre diameter and thick body, they will definitely stand out. They’re made with sterling silver and a three-micron-thick gold plating and, despite the size, they’re not heavy on your ears: each hoop weighs less than 12.5 grams.

Temple & Grace gold hook earrings, $800 Another non-traditional shape, this pair by Temple & Grace is more hook than hoop. They’re made with 18-carat gold that’s smooth and polished for extra shine, and crafted locally in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. And rare for jewellery, you can get free returns within 100 days.

Sener Besim medium accent hoops, $320 Hoops, from the style name alone, are usually circular. But we already knew that luxury eyewear and jewellery designer Sener Besim doesn’t stick to what’s expected. These earrings draw on the brand’s signature geometric shapes and are inspired by Ottoman architecture. The base is vermeil – sterling silver that’s coated with 14-carat gold – and more than 90 per cent of the metal is recycled to keep with the brand’s sustainability ethos.

Reliquia Verona hoops, $199 The classic chunky hoop has been given a geometric update by Sydney-based Reliquia. Shallow lines criss-cross the 18-carat gold-fill surface, resulting in an Art Deco look that elevates these hoops from the usual. Pair them with vintage threads for a more lived-in, heirloom look, or let them lift a more sleek and modern outfit.

S-kin Studio Aurora Bold gemstone hoops, $119 Perhaps one of the smallest hoops on the list, S-kin Studio’s Aurora is anything but meek. The thick huggie-style earring is made from 9-carat gold fill and inset with four dainty gemstones – feminine and minimal all at once. There’s also the smaller Aurelia with the same design if you want your lobes hugged tighter – and you can get charms to dangle off the hoop for a more unique touch.

Saint Valentine Vera Wave gold hoops, $125 If you’re in the market for a dainty earring you can wear everyday, but isn’t just a plain old hoop, this wavy number from Sydney’s Saint Valentine has you covered. It’s vermeil, two-micron-thick 18-carat gold plating over sterling silver, and curved to create small undulating shapes around the perimeter of the circle. There’s also a matching Vera Wave huggie to pair on your second piercings.

Bianko Jane hoops, $190 The only earring that might just be more timeless than the gold hoop is the dainty pearl earring. Both come together in this pearl-adorned hoop by Perth-based Bianko. There are around 20 freshwater pearls around each ring, with a base of 18-carat gold vermeil that’ll turn heads and catch eyes.
