National merit semifinalist: North Royalton High School Senior Akshita Kannan has been named a Semifinalist in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The 2021 PSAT/NMSQT served as an initial screen of entrants to the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. The Selection Index scores of students who met program participation requirements were used to designate a pool of more than 16,000 Semifinalists on a state allocation basis.

North Royalton High School Senior Akshita Kannan has been named a Semifinalist in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Semifinalists are the highest scorers in each of the 50 states and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors. Although Semifinalist qualifying scores vary from one state to another, the scores of all Semifinalists are extremely high.

Before Semifinalists can be considered for Merit Scholarship awards, Semifinalists must qualify as Finalists by completing the National Merit Scholarship Application using NMSC’s Online Scholarship Application and fulfilling several other requirements.  Finalists will be announced in February.

“Akshita is an engaged student who represents NoRoNation in a positive manner in the classroom and in many other ways,” said Principal Sean Osborne, North Royalton City Schools. “She will undoubtedly be in a position to successfully pursue any career field that she is interested in after high school.”

Kannan is the vice president of Key Club, a Spanish Club leader, a member of the National Honor Society, Link Crew, Letterman’s Club, Mock Trial, Model UN, and Yearbook Club. She also is a varsity tennis player for the school’s girls’ team.  After graduation, Kannan hopes to major in economics.

Seed pods: Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District, along with many other soil and water conservation districts across Ohio, are collecting Common Milkweed seed pods until Nov. 15. The seed pods will be processed by Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative to establish new plantings and create additional habitat for monarch butterflies throughout Ohio. Collected seed pods from Common Milkweed can be dropped off at the Cuyahoga SWCD office, 3311 Perkins Ave., Suite 100, Cleveland, OH 44114 anytime in the collection bin which is located on the west side of the building by the garage door. Contact the office for more information at 216-524-6580, ext. 1005 or email aroskilly@cuyahogaswcd.org.

When collecting seed pods from a Common Milkweed plant, it is best to pick when they are dry and gray or brown in color. If the seam pops with gentle pressure they can be picked. It is best to store the picked pods in a paper bag, avoid using plastic bags as they tend to collect and hold moisture. Store the seeds in a dry cool area until you are available to drop them off. Mark your bags with the county they were picked in. Go to http://www.cuyahogaswcd.org/programs/common-milkweed-pod-collection for more information.

Milkweed is the only plant that the Monarch butterfly uses for egg laying and caterpillar rearing. It also serves as a food source for Monarchs as well as many other pollinator species. The disappearance of milkweed across the U.S. has contributed to the 80% decline of the eastern monarch butterfly population over the last 20 years. Cuyahoga SWCD is working hard to change this and you can help. Cuyahoga SWCD’s mission is to implement programs and practices that protect and restore healthy soil and water resources. www.cuyahogaswcd.org.
